Transport for Otaru: Train, Bus and Ferry

Train

The rapid Airport runs between Otaru and New Chitose Airport (73min; ¥1780) via Sapporo (32min; ¥640) every 30 minutes. The last train from Otaru back to Sapporo is 11.10pm.

Practical Tips - Sakaimachi-dori is lined with souvenirs, seafood, sweets, handmade glass craft shops and a music box museum. This street is a 7-minute walk from Minami-Otaru Station one stop west of Otaru. Rapid trains also stop here.

Bus

Highway buses run from Otaru Station (ekimae terminal) to Sapporo Station (1hr; ¥610; every 10min) and Niseko (3 daily; 2hrs; ¥1650). IC card is available. Hokkaido Rail Pass holders can use buses run between Sapporo and Otaru operated by the JR (not Chuo Bus).

Ferry

Shin-Nihonkai Ferry operate an overnight ferry services from Niigata (Tue-Sun; 18hrs; 2nd class from ¥6480) and Maizuru (almost daily; 20hrs; 2nd class from ¥9570). Otaru ferry terminal is about 1.8km west of JR Otaru-chikko Station (about 5 minutes by taxi).
